Stabilizing ?

Looks like the market has stabilized. The indicators are still mixed. From the daily chart, we could be heading to a dead-cat bounce. I will still wait at the sideline until the weekly signals say up.

Anyway, let's have a good laugh with this video.

The serious message is when the crowd is against you, you can either follow them (trend trading) or go against them (contrarian investor). The important is not to run behind the crowd (i.e. you are the last person to follow the trend) or get trampled (catching a failling knife). Theory is easy. Practice is hard. You just got to practice practice practice until you get it right!

The Great American Nightmare

When I'm bullish, I'll tend to weight more on bullish articles. Conversely, when I'm bearish, I'll tend to pay more attention to the bearish news. How bad is the American economy, The Great American Nightmare is a good read. Shadow GDP, CPI, unemployment etc. If everything is doom, what can you do? The answer is in the article too.

Happy reading!

Suggestions for Bursa Malaysia

So, Bursa Malaysia's profit is down. What can I say? The market is not conductive for traders. We need to be able to make money when the market goes up or down. You need to implement an environment that encourages traders to be more active. Currently, many of your policies are not. You need to remember, with Internet, traders can trade any market in the world. The only thing stopping us is the time zone. You may ask why do you need to implement policies that favors traders? Because we dare to buy high and sell higher. Because we don't care the fundamental of any stock. We create activities that energize the market. Now, being a trader is not easy. Many of us starts from small. I can see that you and the brokerage industry got too greedy until you have kill the market itself. My suggestions are:
  1. Lower down brokerage fees: We need from small before going to big time. The current fee structure is too expensive for us. You want more fees or no fees at all?
  2. Free end-of-day data: Paying a year of subscription for new timers is too high. If we cannot learn the art of technical analysis, how are we going to trade?
  3. More sector indexes: Currently, there is no sector index for oil and gas, utilities, shipping, banks, brokerage, steel, retail etc. We need these to determine the hot sector for play. And made it free. Currently your FTSE-BM indexes are so hard to get. I have to manually download it from yahoo everyday.
  4. Allow put warrants: Yes, we want to play when the market goes down too. If you are scare of sell down on local stocks, then allow put warrants for foreign stock. What harm can we do on foreign stock?
So, either you innovate or perish. I don't understand how you all do business. So slow in providing new innovation. Do you have all yes man in your company?

Down Down Down

I have made a mistake on the weekly rating for the plantation sector last week. I should have put it as "down". The error was due to my mistake in interpreting the weekly EMA. Anyhow, all major sectors are down now. Where is the rebound? I don't know.

Still Bearish

I'm still bearish on KLSE. As the KLCI index indicates that the market was pretty oversold, that is why we had a bounce in the week. However, based on the reading of the charts, it tells me that this is only a dead-cat bounce. KLCI may attempt to reach 1200 but I strongly believe that it will test 1050 soon. The trend is still down. This is because the plantation index has just broken it's first uptrend line (there is another one at around 6600).

Well, I'm not an economist but this is what I understand based on what is happening in the US and how it will affect the rest of the world:
High oil and the subprime crisis have affected the auto, airline and financial sectors. People are loosing jobs. Consumption has shifted from high end to lower end. Luxury goods are suffering. Whole sale retailer are seeing more businesses due to limited amount of disposable income. High end retailers will be hit and more jobs will be lost. Consumption will shrink again affecting other sectors. Stock market will go down, reducing the people's wealth. So, the vicious cycle become worse. When the Americans, who lives on borrowed money stop consuming, it will hit the rest of the world. Can the Chinese and Indians replaced the reduced demand? Hey, aren't they the one getting more wealthy because of the Americans?

Anyway, look at the bright side. People will get healthier as they must use more human power to get around. Maybe the percentage of overweight people will be reduced as everyone is eating less (me included). We don't need to spend so much on our health care system because less people are getting sick. Hey, experts are even predicting less road accidents due to high oil! Corruption will be wipe out because nobody has anymore money to bribe. Government development will become more efficient as there is less money to waste. Social order will be disrupted at the beginning to flush out the bad things, but at the end of this crisis, we will come out better.

The consequence of bottom fish

This is a video of Jim Cramer's flip-flop on bank and homebuilders (property in Malaysian lingo). I guess he thought that he can bottom fish especially the banks. From my experience, a reversal can only be known using long term charts. Daily charts only gives you all sort of noise that makes you flip-flop and all confused.

No trust for oneself?

In this article, a survey was done in the US asset management industry. It is found that 46% of domestic fund manager did not invest at all in the fund that they manage! Ok, maybe the fund that the manage does not fit into their financial plan but why so high percentage? No confident in ones ability? Maybe play other peoples' money is more fun than playing own money. Hmm...I wonder if the same survey is done for Malaysian fund, what will be the percentage? A good thesis for any economics student. Any takers for this research topic?

I have one crazy idea, why don't we have a law that requires any analyst that issue a buy call must in fact buy the stock after the report is published. It is easy to say the word buy, but when your money is involved, do you dare to act on it?

Summer Meltdown

KLCI Yearly Chart

It is summertime in the northern hemisphere. Stock exchange around the world are melting down. Malaysian politics are full of confusion, but there is no confusion in our stock exchange, a break of 1000-1050 will mean a complete meltdown of our stock market! This week, the plantation sector has started to weaken. I thought that can earn some money from plantation counters. No chance now.

Don't listen to analyst that says that it is time to buy because our stocks are cheap. It can go cheaper. We should wait for the analyst to buy first to stabilize the market, then only we follow. As small investor/trader (like me) only has small capital, we can't afford to make mistakes. The objective is not to make the highest return. The objective is to make the surest return.

I'm expecting a bounce soon for the US, but then again, when fear grips everyone, it can be very nasty. If you have the facility to play the bear direction (short/put option/put warrant), then you will make money. If not, then keep your money in the bank. At least, you'll lose slowly (due to inflation) then eaten up by the bear.

KLCI Daily Chart

A double top? Or an oscillation between 1280 to 1305? A breakdown will be ugly. Which I think that this is the greater probability as all daily indicators are bearish.

A break down may mean that a revisit of 1150 and maybe 1000. The later is still too early to tell.

The number of weekly bears is now at 260.

I'm having contrasting result for Bursa Malaysia and US Options. I'm losing here but winning there. I guess I got into the wrong sector here.

Bullish sectors for US are: bulk shipping, crude oil shipping, solar manufacturer, oil producer, oil service provider, gas producer, coal producer, steel, agriculture (machinery and fertilizer) and coming soon, technology (besides GOOG, RIMM, AAPL). That's the sectors I'm focusing for the US market.

Now, for Malaysia, I guess it is oil and gas, plantation and steel. I missed the first move in steel. Let's see whether is there any chance later. For oil and gas, I notice that KNM is the leader. Which counters will be the follower? For plantation, maybe KLK will become the leader.

So, the world is currently playing energy and food themes. As long as oil keeps rising, I will play these two themes.

KLCI Weekly Chart

I thought that KLCI will dive last week, but it didn't. It's still holding on. I don't know whether it will continue to go up or stay range bound. The daily, weekly and monthly technical signals are all contradicting each other.

Oil is at USD125++. Will there be play in the oil & gas and plantation sector? I just notice that I missed out the steel sector play. I must admit that I'm not paying much attention to Bursa Malaysia now. Trading in two markets that are 12 hours apart is not easy stuff. I will have to make a decision soon whether to keep trading in Bursa Malaysia. Trends that I hope will be formed are not forming. Maybe there are not enough TA traders in this market.

Currently I'm holding Digi-CB, Choland-C1, Cnooc-C4, Wilmar-C1, Alam and Sapcres-WA.

KLCI-CE, HKEX-C8, SIME-CE and BURSA-CK will be listed on 28 Apr 08. All are in the money. Maybe a good trade for rebound play. Let's see how it opens this Monday morning. I'll wait for a few days of data before deciding. If I use moving average, I'll need at least 7 trading days to read the market sentiment. If I don't follow my technical readings, then I'll based the trade on my feelings, and most of the time, my feelings are bullish bias. That is not good.

Old News

Hmmm...seems like my shipping watch news is old news. Tanker news was published in TheEdge already. Ok, I must admit I don't buy business news reading materials any more. Last time got, but I found out that I cannot translate news information to making money. Why? By the time you read the news, another 100,000 people have also read the news. Now imagine if everyone react to the news simultaneously. Chaos! So to prevent the media of draining my precious fund, I only read online version, not the full article but just the headline. Yes, just the headline, too much information is no good. I'll get confused. Information overload is bad to the brain.

A warning: don't look at snakes or spiders picture. They will make you kecut :p

Shipping Watch

Shipping stocks may be on the move again. Maybulk looks like continuing the uptrend. Unfortunately, no warrant to play.

I'm more interested in MISC. Oil tanker rates are going up again. US oil tanker stocks has started to move. Will MISC follows? They have the 2nd largest fleet in the world. MISC has tricked me a few times, so I'm a little bit cautious in getting in.

Oil tanker market report can be obtained here.

US oil & gas counters rally. How about Cnooc? Chart shows that the consolidation is over. Can it challenge the old high? Two CWs are listed in Bursa: Cnooc-C2 & Cnooc-C4 (C3 doesn't exist). Only Cnooc-C4 is worth looking as it is in the money now and the deadline is in Nov 2008. The premium is quite high, but there will be a play if Cnooc is listed in Shanghai in this few months. Remember how Petroch runs in anticipation of its Shanghai listing? Well, it may and it may not repeat but I believe the risk is worth it.

Looking east: Chmobil, ICBC
Looking south: Capland, DBS
Looking west: Exmobil
Some of these CW are in the money or almost in the money. Due to bad market sentiment, the premium is quite "cheap" but timing is the problem. Can it move up in 2-3 months time? I'm in ICBC and Exmobil CW. Still stalking the rest. I'll play small only to sharpen my skills. Dare not lose my trouser.

Stabilizing or window dressing?

The number of weekly bull counter doesn't change much. They are:
AHP ASDION ATIS BTM CHASE CHEEWAH DELLOYD DKLS FPI FRB GFB GPERAK-NA INGENS INIX IRCB JETSON-WA KKB MAGNUM METACOR MLAB MSC MTDINFR MUDA NALURI NCB NESTLE NTPM PACMAS PARAGON PICORP PORTRAD PSPRING PTB RAPID RAPID-WA SCOMAL SEQUOIA SITATT SRII SUNCRN TAMADAM-WA TCUBES TMCLIFE TOCEAN TRACOMA WARISAN

The number of weekly bear counter has drop to 759. Is the market stabilizing or just a window dressing for the end of 1st quarter?

I'm stalking Digi. Nothing else.

Bears still up

The number of weekly bears is now at 808. The number of weekly bulls increased a little bit to 48. The bulls are:
ABFMY1 AMTEK ASDION ATIS BINTAI BTM CHASE CHEEWAH CME CYBERT DAYA DELLOYD DFZ-PD DKLS EG-WB FPI FRB GOLSTA GPERAK-NA INIX IRCB JERASIA KKB LOH&LOH MAGNUM METACOR MLAB MSC MTDINFR NALURI NCB NVMULTI PACMAS PARAGON PICORP PORTRAD PPEDANA PTB RAPID RAPID-WA SEQUOIA SITATT SRII TMCLIFE TOCEAN TRACOMA UBG WARISAN

The boat is rocking harder. This political uncertainty will surely bring down the market more. Still staying out of the market. Looking at US market, my interpretation is that it is going for a rebound. Looking at KLCI chart, it is oversold too. Maybe it is time for a rebound too. How to play a rebound? I don't have a game plan at all.

Bulls still down

Bull counters continue to shrink:

There are now 776 bearish securities. It is easier to buy a counter that is going down than up. HKSE and SGX warrants are all also down. How long will this continue?

Tsunami everywhere

First election tsunami. Then stock market tsunami. First time I see a 10%. First time for everyone. Now we know the circuit breaker has been tested and worked.

I guess from now onwards, political-linked counters are to be avoided. I did not dare to buy today. Dare not catch a falling knife, even for a rebound play.

If one is hoping for a bull market, from my chart reading, I estimate that it will take a least a year to repair the technicals (if it stops sliding).

With recession in the US, I guess that work competition will get tougher now. So, time to concentrate on my daily job and stop dreaming of making it in the stock market.

What's left for the bulls?

Only 72 counters left (7 Mar 08) that are considered to be in the bullish stage but many are in the process of dropping out:

The bears? There are 731 of 'em. Too long to put in the blog. So, that's at 10 to 1 ratio for the bears.

It is definite that BN majority will be reduced this Saturday. Does that mean another round of selling come Monday?

To proxyclub, I have to presume you work in a brokerage based on your "advice". Why? By following your suggestion, one would have to pay a minimum of RM28,000 for all the counters in KLSE (ok...I'm not sure the number, but I guess it is around 1000 excluding the warrants). Why not just invest in an ETF?

No CNY rally. No election rally. More than half of the counters are bearish. No point to buy for the long term. Maybe good play for day traders or contra traders. Otherwise, I think that one should just stay out. With commission so high, it's tougher for the ikan bilis like me to survive now.
