Prudence is the watchword for investors in the Year of the Rat which begins on Thursday, according to fung shui masters.
However, one of them believes there could be a stock market boom in April following good news from the mainland - though he also cautions speculators to be wary of hiccups following the end of the Beijing Olympic Games.
Fung shui master So Man-fung said there will be some fluctuations in the stock market but without the fiery momentum that was seen over the past few months.
He said the Year of the Rat is dominated by the wood element meaning those working in wood- related industries such as paper, Chinese medicine and textiles will enjoy some good fortune.
However, this could also mean that the prices of agricultural products could soar in 2008.
Earth-based industries such as architecture, infrastructure, building and mining will also be profitable.
Fung shui master Alion Yeo Tim- ming also predicts the Year of the Rat will be a cooling-off period for the economy and that much financial prudence should be exercised.
Yeo, who is also a student of the Indian religion Tantra, advised people to save money and be very cautious about investments. He expects the Chinese government to announce good news by spring, around March or April, and that this will elevate people's spirits and the stock and real estate market, but that the economy will slow down again after the Beijing Olympics. However, it will not be a good year for Rats or Horses. People born in the Year of the Rat are said to be Fan Tai Sui, or those who have offended the ancient grand duke of the planet Jupiter, and they can expect a rocky year ahead. The Horse is said to be the Rat's nemesis, but those born in that year will also have a rough passage with many unwanted life alterations, such as changes of heart and money problems. Those who were born in the Year of the Rabbit will be in the mood for love as their "star of the red phoenix" will be spreading its wings in 2008.
